Artist Statement
Joe will soon graduate from the University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in Emergent Digital Practices with minors in Studio Art and Spanish. Having studied in all these fields, Joe is passionate about design and aesthetic in many different mediums ranging from digital art to painting. He has a high focus on composition, simplicity, and abstraction. The majority of his work is visually balanced and harmonious without relying on overt messages or narratives. The viewer is meant to find their own interpretation and meaning for themselves. Being very methodical with his work, he always starts out with a vision and follows through until completion.
As a recent change of pace, Joe has engaged in artwork for the Woman, Life, Freedom exhibitions. He has been able to use his creative skills to help spread knowledge about the women’s revolution in Iran and show his support for the cause. As a very important yet underrepresented issue, Joe has worked with his peers in the Emergent Digital Practices program along with Iranian artists and creative people from across the globe to show their work and support to all the people in Iran.
Originally from Boulder, Colorado, Joe has always shown a high level of creativity and is eager to show his work to the world.
Project Statement
Composition: Humble Beginnings is a video installation that takes simple doodles from my eleventh-grade planner and turns them into three-dimensional spaces. The doodles become the stepping stones into the realm of digital art. This piece will show an original doodle created in 2017/2018 and over time delves into the mind of the creator to alter the perspective of the vision behind it. This is done by turning the doodle into an immersive, three-dimensional world that changes and develops into a different doodle. This process will happen multiple times, showing the unique worlds each doodle creates. The creation of a seemingly rudimentary doodle opens the mind to possibilities and unique ideas that were previously unimaginable.
