Composition: Opposite Triptychs is an open-ended project that is a culmination of triptychs. Each one has two photos on each side that represent some sort of opposite (fire and ice, night and day, etc) with a central photo/image that is a combination of the two. The central piece uses the other two photos in creative ways to create an engaging final product. The many tools from photoshop allow for the two photos in each triptych to be combined in different ways so each one is unique. From the beginning, this project maintained its identity but many ideas changed and evolved with each triptych. Over time, this project can continue to evolve as more triptychs are created.
Composition: Cryptic (2022)
Cryptic | adj | cryp·tic | ˈkrip-tik : having a meaning that is mysterious or obscure.
This collection of large photographs challenges the viewer to attempt to discern meaning and subject when there is minimal context. The tone of the collection may invoke certain emotions such as entrapment, gloominess, or fear. All of the photographs work together to create cohesion, especially in hue and exposure, as well as contrast, particularly in shape and detail.
Originally, the project was going to be based more on abstraction alone but after the first critique, my focus changed. There was no tone in mind and I wasn’t pushing myself hard enough. With a goal to change my perspective and learn more about the actual taking of the photo instead of manipulating it in photoshop, I needed something more specific and challenging.
This project made me look into the viewfinder in a completely different way and force myself to remove any knowledge of anything outside of what I was taking a photo of. I, unlike the audience of my project, will have knowledge of context outside of the frame of the photo which automatically gives me a possible different outlook on the photo. I had to try to put myself into the position of an unbiased viewer to choose the most optimal of my photos to print and display.
